If you want to make emails more enjoyable for the reader, try adding some color or change the style or size of the font being used.   Your Mac has a variety of fonts available.   Note the steps below are written using a new email in Mail for demonstration purposes, but are the same for other applications such as Pages.

1 - Open “Mail” and click on “New Message”.

2 - Fill in the email address and subject lines.

4 - Click on “Fonts”.

3 - Move your pointer down to the body of the email and click to start typing.   The curser will flash.  (Or use the Tab key to move from the address section to the body of the email. )

5 - Notice that the font being used is highlighted.   In the example, we are using English, Helvetica, in Regular style.  The font Size is 12.

A window opens with three panes.

  1. The left pane show collections of fonts.

  2. The middle pane show the Family of fonts in a particular collection.

  3. The right pane shows options available for the chosen font.

  4. On the extreme right the size of the font can be changed.

6 - Let’s click on another font. I clicked on   “Hoefler Text”.

7 - Want to see what the font looks like?  Click on the dot under “Fonts” and drag your pointer down to reveal a sample of the font style.

8 - Now type something.   You will see the font has changed.

9 - There are three ways to change  the size of the font:

  1. a)  Slide the inside blue bar until you see the size you want, then click on the number.  Or

  2. b)    Slide the outside blue slider dot until you see the number displayed above. Or

  3. c) Double-click on the number just below Size” and change it.

10 - Want to change a font after typing the words?   Highlight the words then go back to step # 4.

11 - Want to change color?  Click on “Color”.

12 - Pick a new color from the color wheel.  Use the slider bar (12a) or move the white dot with your pointer.

When you start typing, the new colour will show up.  If you want to change the color of text you have already written, highlight the words as in step #10 and click on the colour wheel.

Have fun.   Please note, after all your hard work, some email applications may not display the font you choose and will just show the text in a standard font.
