For this example we re going to  use a free application called Skype.

For instructions on downloading Skype click here.

1 - Open a finder window, (i.e. folder on your desktop, hard-drive icon,or clicking on the happy face in the Dock.)

Done correctly, you will be placing an icon depicting the application on the Dock, while the actual application stays in the Applications Folder.  Choose any location on the Dock you like.  As soon as you drag the icon close enough, items on the dock will separate to allow you to drop it in place.  Be careful, do not let go of the icon before you reach the dock. If you do, the actual application will end up on your desktop. If that happens, before doing anything else, hold down the command key, and press the Z key.  That will undo the move and put the application back in the Applications folder so you can try again.

3 - Look for the Skype icon and drag it to the Dock

Note that I am using the List view in this example.

2 - Open the Applications folder by clicking on Applications  in the left pane.

Applications should be listed in the right pane.  (I used the list view, you could use the icon view or one of the others.)  Note that you should always place any applications you want to use into this folder.  Never leave them on the desktop.

(To drag, move your pointer over the Skype icon, press down as you would for a click, hold it down and move your mouse (pointer) down to the dock, being careful not to let go until you get to the dock and two application icons move aside so you can continue the dragging motion until your pointer is over the dock and between two icons.  Then let go.  (4)
