Force Quit
Force Quit
Worst case scenario, if nothing else works, hold the power button down for 10 seconds to shut the computer off. Then restart. Don’t be fooled by the computer just going to sleep. You should hear the start-up chime when it starts up again. Keep in mind that all unsaved changes are lost.
6 - Then click on the Apple.
If an application doesn’t seem to respond, and/or that spinning beach ball just won’t quit spinning, even after waiting a while, the application may have frozen up. No need to shut off the whole computer though. In just a few steps you can shut down just that application.
2 - If the Force Quit Applications window does not open, move your pointer to the top left hand corner and click on the Apple.
I’m going to use a template from Pages as an example.
1 - The first thing to try, is hold down the Command, and Option keys, and pressing the Escape key. (Esc on your keyboard, top left.) If the Force Quit Applications window opens.

A drop-down menu should open.
3a - Notice the Force Quit command.
5 - Sometimes the Drop-down menu does not open. If this happens, try this: Click somewhere on the desktop outside of the application window so that the Finder shows on the menu bar.
3b - Now, press the shift key. Force Quit becomes Force Quit xxx. Where xxx stands for the name of the application that you are presently in, and want to force quit. In our sample, it is Pages.
4 - Move your pointer over the Force Quit xxx command, to highlight it, and click on it. The application should quit immediately.
7 - You should now be able to continue with step #3. If you forget to hold the shift key down, and click Force Quit, a small window will open asking you if you want to force the application to quit. Click Force Quit to go ahead.
